Can your Crappy relationship be causing hair loss?

I think it is safe to say that we have all experience a bad relationship. I know what your thinking but honestly this piece is more than just the senseless couple fights that stress us out!!!! I mean seriously does he have to answer every phone call? Wait yes he does he is my manager. Ok ok I have digressed. Did you know that relationships in general take a toll on our mental health and then our physical? Good relationships are the leading cause of successful environments . But what happens when the relationship is super uber draining? This takes a toll on your mental health and on your Physical . Is it time to really take a look at your hair and determine wether it is naturally shedding or your hair is alarmingly falling out? Well, lets consider relationships beyond a partner how about your relationship with social media, extreme diets, food, hair products and many more other relationships. That can cause stress and hair loss.

Izamar Rivera Diaz , a psychologist who works in the field of human interactions and relationships and our in house CurlPop Psychologist, says “everything in life is about balance and knowledge. If someone is dependant on the other person’s opinion and value they can be left very unstable. All stressful or negative relationships will always lead to a loss in many things including hair loss.”

The difference between hair shedding and hair loss is not the same per se . Curly girls don’t brush their hair often so the natural daily shedding doesn’t complete its full ability to leave the head of hair. It may shed from the scalp but not loosen up from the strands . This may be alarming when you see a ball of shedded hair but don’t be alarmed that’s natural . Alarming hair loss? It’s when there is a bald spot diameter of an 1/8 or larger. A Patch of hair missing is now the time to be alarmed and the time to consider your relationships. This would be the time to introduce a great relationship between you an MD and my favourite a Trichologist. A hairdresser can only do so much. And while we study anatomy during hair school, reality is we don’t specialise in the medical world.

A relationship that is going in so many different directions may lead to an “I don’t care about anything it’s not going to matter anyways” kind of mindset. While you maybe spending time in this type of relationship, your stress levels and lack of care can push your hair follicles into a resting phase. Causing hair loss . So just as giving into and giving up and putting up with a not so great relationship your hair follicles also can give up and sometimes give in to a not so great phase . TELOGEN-EFFLUVIUM (side note this does not mean go ahead and break away from a relationship. It just means you have to take a healthier approach)

Telogen-effluvium happens when a high amount of stress pushes a large number of follicles into a resting phase .These affected hairs can all of a sudden fall out when brushing or finger combing your hair. Especially when washing it .

Don’t stress out about Telogen Effluvium. Even though the American Association of hair loss says it’s the second most common form of hair loss it can be reversed. This will require a replacement of essential nutrients either by supplements or food. FYI avocados help grow out your hair faster.

Take a look at your relationship with social media. Is it a healthy one? Or do you find yourself stressed out because your hair or your life doesn’t appear as amazing as what you are looking at? This is called the “COMPARE AND DESPAIR FACTOR”. While this leads to many anxieties , I want to talk about the stress of it leading to fear of personal failure , feeling of self consciousness or an unhealthy relationship with yourself needing perfectionism . Also hair loss because it’s stressful.

Which can also lead to TRICHOTILLOMANIA . This particular hair loss is one that needs the assistance of your physical hand movements . It is the irresistible urge to pull out hair from your scalp and also your eyebrows or other places where hair is on the body. It becomes a way of dealing with stress or many uncomfortable feelings such as loneliness, tension or simply being bored. I reached out to our in house pshycologist, Izmar D., as I am seeing more and more guests sitting in my chair with this particular scalp condition . She proceeded to tell me this is not something that should be taken lightly. It’s a serious thing and can lead to other serious issues. As an example, self esteem issues. So, right about now your eyes are wide open and thinking “wait I don’t have that issue” While that may be true, ask yourself if you bite your nails or pick at your skin. those are signs of stress and anxiety and that there is something wrong as well. If you read this and you identify with Trichotillomania and you said “ I can stop any time” just know that you can stop when you get proper treatment. Seeing the right expert for this is very important. Your MD. should refer you to one.

Here is a DIY for creating a sensory substitute to satiate the urge to pull hair. Wear a hair elastic around your wrist and play with the elastic.

Let’s talk about the relationship we have with hair products . This relationship can lead us to spending money, unnecessary money and unnecessary occupied space unnecessary time wasted . Even if you don’t have a bad relationship with products if you are stressed about what was mentioned listen up. Those components can be extremely stressful. If stress becomes severe it can trigger auto immune disorders such as ALOPECIA AREATA.

This auto immune disease attacks your own body. It attacks your hair follicles . this causes the hair to come out in clumps and missing hair spots can be the size of a quarter. There are treatments to help grow the hair quickly. But why let it get there when you can just prevent it.

Don't bring it into the 2019

The start of 2019! It’s always the most goal journaling day of the year. If you are anything like me once again you will find yourself meditating on life and business. Or trying to write a blog that is informative with the “what’s in it for you”. honestly I thought to write so many different things about “how to” create hair goals . Let’s be honest we can’t leap into hair goals if we are not letting go of old habits. So get you fingers ready to screen shot some info that your going to want to share . Let’s start with curly hair things we shouldn’t bring into 2019.

How healthy is your scalp? We have lived through the trend of co washing . sometimes we took it as far as only washing our hair once a month. That was just not so good. See cleansing the scalp and getting rid of build up promotes healthy scalp skin. Yes my Curl Pop’rs , your scalp is SKIN! Just like the rest of the skin on your body needs to get a regular cleanse because other wise you stink and can get rashes. the same thing happens to the scalp. An unhealthy scalp will prevent you from growing your hair, having lustre in your hair and a great curl pattern. So in 2019 and forever get to cleansing and scalp loving habits.

We all have been here. the fight between having length and wanting our Curls back. Reality is, you can have both but it won’t always look good . Your Curls may grow in and you can wear half of it with your natural growth and the other half with your not so natural growth. Question though. What would be the benefit of a frustrating journey? Thats right , if you don’t have hours to spend on trying to get your hair to look faux amazing than in 2019 get rid of it . Replace unhealthy length for your very own natural healthy hair growth. Actually while we are getting rid of bad length get rid of bad anything!

While you are keeping your scalp clean and clear keep your shower clear and clean. Meaning get rid of feeling like you are showering in a space that looks like the isle at a Target store . You really don’t need all that chaos or products. So, in 2019 get rid of the shampoo and conditioner that has been sitting in your shower for months and introduce a spa like feel to your hair cleansing experience. Choose just one Cleanser and one Conditioner per seasons.

Bleaching is really bad for you. You want to know what isn’t bad for your curls? Lightning the hair . when we lighten hair that just means that we are using luxury products that can “lighten your hair” . These products contain all sorts of protein strengtheners and bonding properties . So if you are worried about bleach I would say that you should worry and run the other way. Before you run know that there is a big difference as to why experts and salon professionals do not use the word Bleach. It’s because we don’t lighten with bleach . We lighten with lightners or decolorizers but never bleach. In 2019 ditch who ever has bleached your feelings in the past and get into the chair of a lightning expert that can make your curls come to light !

Between running business, our family lives and our insta feeds who’s got time to waste or spare? Listen unless you are creating content for social media there is no reason you should be spending half a day on your conditioning treatments. If you know what I am talking about you know that you have dreaded the hair treatment day . So, in 2019 get rid of wasted time and replace it with purposeful intentional affective time. There are plenty of conditioning treatments that are powerful and fast enough to work with in 3 minuets . DITCH THE WASTED TIME!

Finding Your Way Back to Curls and Being Inspirational by Aleisbel V.

It was just a couple of years ago I was accepting an award for a curly hair company when I stated in front of thousands “ CURLY HAIR IS NOT A TREND IT’S A NATURAL MOVEMENT" . Shortly there after social media platforms started to become flooded with natural curly girls , transitioning and hair experts  wanting to create a community for each other . Not just any community but a community making statements and demanding that our hair category was just as normal  as any other hair categories while showing off the  EPIC-NESS of our natural beauty. I have taken the opportunity to invite 3 of our CurlPop friends to talk about who they are , their favorite products , natural hair journeys , advice and how they use their social media platforms. They’re vibes were far from shy.  Don’t forget to peep they all have different textures and curl patterns while they’re goals and journey’s are similar in empowering  women!

SONRIE, ERES BELLA

SONRIE, ERES BELLA

Name: Tatiana Fernandez.

Instagram: Instagram.com/taty_froever

Boss moves: Currently Self employed. Business Administration & Accounting Graduate.

Hobby: Being able to promote self love in a positive way on my Instagram page. I like motivating women to love themselves and appreciate themselves. We are all beautiful in our own way and I believe that’s what makes each and everyone of us different & uniquely beautiful.

How much time do you spend on your hair?: Now that is a great question. I think when it comes to my hair I try to take care of my hair as much as I can. When I’m not busy I take the time to care for  and see what I can do to better the health of my hair. When I first started taking care of my hair I felt like I was too obsessed with having beautiful healthy curly hair but what I learned with time is that it’s all a process. As the time passes we learn something new. We learn from experience.

If 2 of your favorite products got discontinued  what would you do?: First , I would cry just a little bit just because it’s so hard for me to find products that work for me but I wouldn’t give up hope. I would continue trying new products out to find the ones that work for my hair.

What are your favorite products?: My favorite products vary on the climate change and the mood my hair goes through. I know it may seem crazy but I can’t use the same products every week or my hair becomes harder to manage. So far the products that haven’t let me down when I’ve used them are:

Phyto Specific Paris - Cleansing Cream.

Shea Moisture- Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo.

Woman to Woman Naturals Gorgeous Collection ( Conditioner)

Camille Rose Naturals - Moroccan Pear Conditioning Custard

Camille Rose Naturals- Cocoa Nibs & Honey Ultimate Growth Serum.

Bounce Curl - Light Creme Gel.

Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus Curl Enhancing Smoothie .

Righteous Roots Oils

Coco & Eve-  Like a Virgin Hair Masque.

Shea Moisture- African Black Soap Purification Masque.

Who’s side do you get your texture from?: My moms side. Even though she has straight hair my grandmothers hair is similar to mine.

Who’s side do your curls come from?: My moms side. My grandmother has curly hair similar to mine.

Are you a transition or Big Chop type of Curls?: I actually did both. Right before I started my hair journey my hair was up to my belly button.   My hair was actually damaged from my roots to my ends. I know it’s hard to believe but even the hair that had grown out was damaged just because I straightened my hair every single day and I made sure that my roots were straightened even if that meant almost burning my scalp off, sadly because of that I hurt a section of my scalp which is now sensitive to heat.

So what I decided to do was a semi-big chop which is what I called it. I cut my hair almost to ear length and let it grow out until I was ready to cut the damaged section again.

DIY or product junkie?: I like both options. I have A LOT of products , some have worked on my hair and some haven’t but lately, I’ve been really into learning about natural remedies and masques. I think my hair reacts better when I use natural masques to really hydrate it. I would say I’m a little bit of a DIY and a Product Junkie.

What advice would you give to a Curly girl who is about to embark on a Curly hair journey?: I would let her know that it’s all about being patient. “Enjoy the process, grow , learn and really take this time to appreciate yourself”. Hair is hair, it grows back don’t stress so much  on having perfect curly hair. The more into your Curly Hair Journey The more you will learn what to do and what not to do, what your hair likes and doesn’t like.

What advice would you give your 13 year old self?: I would definitely say to my 13 year old self “Girl, take it easy. Enjoy being a kid and PLEASE embrace your beautiful curls.” Don’t be afraid to be different and keep your dreams alive not only in your thoughts but in your heart. You are your biggest motivator in life but most importantly let God guide you at all times.

I like to use my platform to empower women . How do you use your platform?: Personally for me it’s been about self love. I’m very passionate about making people smile and feel beautiful with who they are. I use my platform not only to talk about my curly hair journey but also to promote self love in the best way I can. I post content which every woman can get motivated from no matter their age.]
